Helena Mellberg What are they for? 16-30 Nov 2024
Vernissage Sat November 16 at 12-16
“Those savages who compete for our space and resources. Those with languages we don’t understand and who are better off without us. Who has a soul, an intrinsic value just by existing in a world dominated by humans?
My sculptures have partly come from these thoughts. But also because they appeared in my head. The animals, that is. Wolves with a flair for drama, madcap wild horses and lions with attitude, all telling anecdotes from their lives. The wild horse called out to me in English :
“You better make me look free and cool with a golden heart”.
I try to do them justice using durable clay that can withstand the dramatic firings of raku and nude raku, a process as dramatic and fragile as those I want to portray.”
Helena Mellberg
Since her artistic training in the early 2000s, Helena Mellberg has worked with clay as an expression in various forms. From the turned to the sculptural, in recent years with a greater focus on sculpture. She strives to convey the tactile nature of working with clay and the tension between the fragility and hardness of the fired shard.
